Library Mission, Goals, and Outcomes

PLO 1,2,3

Library instruction refers to single or multiple class sessions taught by faculty librarian that introduce students to library research strategies. Library instruction sessions are designed to supplement specific courses. Instruction covers use of the library’s website, online catalog, and electronic article databases.

Sessions are meant to help students develop basic information literacy skills by focusing on how to articulate an information need, formulate a strategy to find information to fulfill that need, and evaluate the information that they find.  Special attention is paid to evaluating external internet resources for accuracy and reliability.

PLO 1: The student will demonstrate the information literacy skills for constructing effective search strategies (i.e keyword, advanced, truncation)

PLO 2: The student will demonstrate the information literacy skills for analyzing search results from library research tools (i.e library catalog or the online databases).

PLO 3: The student will demonstrate the information literacy skills for evaluating the quality and credibility of sources.

How does this PLO 1,2,3  support Library Goal 1?
Library goal #1: Integrate information literacy instruction into acceleration programs and guided pathways initiatives.

What are the expected outcomes?

Students will demonstrate necessary research skills after instruction given by librarians. At least 75% of students assessed will demonstrate the ability to construct effective search strategies; analyzing search results from library research tools (i.e library catalog or the online databases).and evaluate library sources for reliability and credibility.

What Method of Assessment will you use to assess this PLO?
Students will demonstrate this information literacy skill in programs developed by instruction librarians.
MoA will vary depending on the course assignement, For example, library instruction survey or pre/post test or worksheet will be given to all students who attend a  library instruction session.

How will you assess how well this goal was achieved (performance indicators)?
1. Library instruction survey or worksheets. Students will be able to find a source relevant to their topic.

Course-integrated library information literacy instruction (one-shots). In course-integrated library instruction, librarians work with faculty from other divisions to design and deliver library instruction that are tailored to the research and information needs of individual classes.

We assess information literacy learning outcomes in a variety of ways. For example,  we have used pre-post tests, worksheets and and activities to assess whether students are able to perform the research tasks taught in specific instruction sessions. In addition, faculty librarians providing library instruction will meet as needed to discuss problems, changes, and new instruction methodologies.
